. . . I was honorably released [p.66] in the fall of 71. I received my release to return and after visiting with my relations and friends I took the train to Liverpool in company with Lot Smith , Brother Timms and son, Brother Brundle [James Bundell] and son [Thomas Bundell], Sister Goulder [Gaulder] and two daughters which were going to Utah. We sailed in the steam ship Nevada on the Guion Line the following missionaries returned at the same time namely Lot Smith, John Jacques, Albert Dewey, J. L. Shumway, George W. Groo and myself, also 97 ninety-seven Saints which was going to Utah. We left Liverpool on the 26, arrived at Queenstown on the 27. Brother Lot Smith was appointed as our President by Brother Albert Carrington who had charge of the British Mission at the time. Headwinds from Liverpool. In the evening quite a number of the Saints was seasick only about six attended prayers. Brother Dewey officiated.
Friday the 28. The Saints nearly all sick. I attended prayers.
Saturday the 29. Saw a steamer the "Minnesota" belonging to the Guion Line of steamers.
Sunday the 30. Pleasant weather. Attended meeting in the cabin in the morning. The Church of England services at half past two in the afternoon. Held a meeting in the steerage. Myself, Brother Jacuques, and Brother Groo took up the time instructed the Saints upon their duties in Zion. At night had some very good singing [-] the Saints we saw on our trip quite a number of porpoises and 10 whales during the week and some sharks. Foggy on Thursday came very near running into a fishing vessel.
Sunday the 6th. The pilot came on board at 8 o'clock a.m. All fine, morning headwinds. That day saw several steamers that day. Attended meetings in the cabin in the morning. Held a meeting in the steerage in the afternoon. Three of the officers present at the meeting. Brother George W. Groo addressed the Saints.
Monday the 7. Arrived at Sandy Hook at half past 5 a.m. All at half past six came to Salton Islands on the left hand and Honey Islands on the right hand. Stayed there and was examined by the doctor. Left there at 8 o'clock and arrived at New York at 9 o'clock. We was treated very kind all of the way. Brother Fost [Foster] and wife came back with us they had been to England for Sister Fost [Foster] health. The government officers came on board and examined our baggage and then we landed and went to the Castle Garden. Stayed there all night with the Saints.
Tuesday the 8th. Crossed the Hudson River to New Jersey and started on the railroad thence to Pittsburgh arrived there at 9 o'clock p.m. Stayed there all night.
Thursday the 10th. [p.67] Left Pittsburgh at 7 o'clock a.m. for Chicago arrived at Crestline at five and stayed there 2 hours then went by the express to Chicago arrived there at half past seven on Friday morning the 11th. Left for Omaha at half past. Arrived at Crinton at 4, crossed the Mississippi River arrived at Omaha on Saturday the 12th. At 9 o'clock a.m. I stayed there till six and then left for Utah.
Sunday the 13th. Had some good singing.
Tuesday the 15th. Crossed the North Platte arrived at Ogden on Wednesday the 16th at 4 o'clock and arrived home at Bountiful at 7 p.m. Found all well. . . . [p.68]
