"EMIGRATION MOVEMENTS. . . . The John Cummins is chartered for us, and is to sail on the 20th of February. . . ."
MS, 2:10 (Feb. 1842), p.155
"THIRTEENTH COMPANY. -- John Cummins, about 200 souls. Previous to the sailing of this company, the following emigration notice appeared in the Millennial Star:
'The John Cummins is chartered for us, and is to sail on the twentieth of February 1842. Immediate application should be made by those who wish a passage. Passage costs from £3 15 shillings to £4, including provisions. Passengers find their own bedding and cooking utensils; and all their luggage goes free. On arriving at New Orleans, a passage can be obtained up the Mississippi River, fifteen hundred miles by steamer, for fifteen shillings, and freight free, as we have learned by letter from Elder Joseph Fielding, who sailed with two hundred passengers in the Tyrian last September.'
The John Cummins sailed on the day appointed. (February 20th, 1842.) In the Times and Seasons of May 16th, 1842, the following appears in an editorial notice:
'Elder Amos Fielding has just arrived in Nauvoo with about one hundred and fifty emigrants from England; a ship load came some time ago.'
This last sentence has very likely reference to the Saints sailing in the John Cummins."
