. . . Left for Liverpool on the 12th and then met about 76 elders returning [p. 5] on February 19th 1858 sailed from Liverpool on board the ship Empire. Landed in New York in good health and spirits after a passage of 28 days. Met with difficulty. The custom house officer arrested 8 rifles, 6 swords, because we was Mormons. After 3 days continual labor with John W. Berry and myself we succeeded in obtaining. [UNCLEAR] Then Brother and Sister Stapford kindly provided me with a good home at their house where I was very comfortable.
About the 10th March we left for Burlington by railway, 1,400 miles and arrived there on March 16th. Stayed there 2 days and then started for Florence on foot, 325 miles through a strange country and destitute of means in company with Elders John W. Berry, William Pace, Robert [E.] Miller, Joseph Seafield [Scofield] and [p. 6] myself. The Lord opened our way and we landed in Florence on April first. Found some of the Brethren there. Remained there until the 28th in the most adverse circumstances, teams arrived. . .[p. 7]
. . . On June 21st we arrived in Salt Lake City. All well and rejoicing that the Lord had delivered and preserved our lives to return to our homes in peace once more. . . . [p. 8].
