. . . After taking farewell with our aged parents, brethren, friends, home and country, by the command of the Lord, I and my wife started on the railway train from Paisley Station on Monday Feb. 14th, 1848 at 45 minutes past 3 p.m., whereby steamboat and railway trains, were landed in Liverpool at 11 o'clock a.m. of the following morning, where we met with James, Janet, Mary and Margaret, my brother and sisters, also Andrew Cahoon, brother in-law & who sailed from Glasgow on Feb. 12 [p.15]. They experienced a very severe storm the night before landing in Liverpool. From this time on we were under the guardianship of Elder A. [Andrew] Cahoon, brother in-law, who was returning to his native land from a mission to England. We had now made our arrangements to sail to New Orleans on board the ship Carnatic, commanded by Captain McKenzie. Number of Saints on board 120. President F.D. Richards his counselors (elders) [C. H.] Wheelock, A. [Andrew] Cahoon & S. [Samuel] W. Richards; James and Margaret my, brother and sister, were baptized at Liverpool, February 17th 1848 by Elder Littelfield. At 10 o'clock a.m. of the 22nd. We weighed anchor, we were 10 days in the Irish Channel. Early on Sunday the 27th it commenced blowing a severe gale which continued for 24 hours. After this storm had blown over we experienced fine weather throughout the remaining part of our voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. James Young, Senior, died March 30th, 1848 and was buried in the sea. He was about 65 years of age. Landed at New Orleans 7 o'clock p.m. of the 19th April 1848. We next took steamer up the Mississippi river where we arrived at St. Louis on the 30th April where my wife [p.16] met with her sister, Elisabeth, wife to George McKenzie, who joined the church in Scotland; gathered with the Saints to Nauvoo, but after, returned to St. Louis. We now started on our journey for G. [Great] S. [Salt] Lake by way of Council Bluffs or Winter Quarters, distance about 350 miles. Brother James and I went by land with a span of horses. The rest of the family went up the Missouri River by steamboat. Met at Council Bluffs., bought oxen and wagons for our journey across the plains. Started from Winter Quarters June 1st 1848 in President Brigham Young's company. . . . [p.17]
