On the S. S. Wyoming, Nov. 5, 1889.President George Teasdale.
Dear Brother,--We had an exceedingly pleasant voyage, the weather being fine and the wind mostly favorable [p.749] to our course. There has been some seasickness, more or less affecting the emigrants and the returning missionaries; but a general feeling of kindness and sympathy towards the sufferers has made this ordeal as light as possible, and we shall soon look back upon this part of our experiences with satisfaction, and then feel to express our gratitude to our Heavenly Father, who has blessed and protected us so far.
The emigrants have been an exceptionally good company of Saints. Whenever they have been well, their songs of praise and thanksgiving could be heard both from the steerage rooms and on deck, and they have won for themselves the respect and good will of their fellow travelers, as well as the officers and crew. We have held prayer meetings regularly every morning and evening, and have had a preaching service on Sunday. Our meeting last Sunday was a gratifying success. The weather was so fine that we could meet on deck. Elder S. T. Whitaker spoke in the English language upon the first principles of the gospel; and some Scandinavian elders made addresses in their native tongue. Many strangers were attentive listeners, and we found some believers amongst them. Later:
We came into harbor at 11:30 p.m. on the 5th; passed the Custom House and Castle Garden officials all right, and are now on our way to Norfolk, where we expect to arrive in time for the six o'clock train to take us westward tonight.
All feel well and thankful to our Heavenly Father, who has blessed and preserved us, and we trust that he will kindly watch over us hereafter.
With kind regards to yourself and the brethren at "42," [42 Islington WAS THE ADDRESS OF THE ENGLISH MISSION] we subscribe ourselves your brethren and co-workers in the cause of truth,
