My journey to Zion, 1865.
May 4 At one o'clock we left Copenhagen on the S.S. "Aurora" and arrived well in Hamburg, for the Lord was with us and gave us good weather.
We went immediately aboard the sail ship Kimball which should carry us to America. Each were directed to a bed; and President Viderborg [Widerborg] settled accounts with us, paying back our money in gold. President D. H. Wells was also on the ship with us, and with prayer to the Lord he consecrated the ship and its crew to its long voyage with us over the many waters.
May 8 We sailed from Hamburg and continued our voyage over the North Sea, east of England, and close by the coast of Scotland. All is well.
May 19 A furious storm of about a day and a night which was at the bottom of all the seasickness that followed. The storm calmed and we began to be able to see icebergs and the fish leaped in the water about us.
June 15 Landed in New York and the same day continued our journey across the States by railroad.
June 26 Arrived in Wyoming, Nebraska.
June 31 We began our trek over the plains.
Nov. 8 Arrived in great Salt Lake City.
From Copenhagen to New York 42 days
New York to Wyoming, (Nebraska) 12 days
Remained there 36 days
(Nebraska) Wyoming to Zion 100 days
The whole journey 190 days

On the ship I acted as doctor, distributed medicine to the sick and likewise anointed them. President Viderborg had set me apart as second counselor to the captain of our company, A. [Anders] W. Vinberg [Winberg]; --he was a good man, and much loved by the Saints.
We had several annoyances and troubles on the trip. The Indians attacked us just after leaving Fort Laramie; seven brethren were badly wounded, but none died, and a sister, Grundtveg's [Grundtvig] wife was carried away as prisoner and I have not heard of her since.
Nov. 8 Arrived in Salt Lake City and lived with my brother-in-law Borglum till Jan. 14, 1866; I then moved with my family down in the 15th Ward and rented a room, which cost $8 a month. . . . [p.42]
