[April] 10th Monday, in Glasgow all day, and in the evening started from Glasgow for Liverpool with the 9:15 train. Traveled all night. Got to Liverpool at 6:10 a.m. in the morning.
The 11th was in Liverpool all day. In the evening went on board the S.S. Nevada [p.137] for to start for home in America. Assisted some in locating the people in their berths on board, was great confusion. Slept on board all night.
12th Wednesday, on board the ship all day. Started from Liverpool at 5:49 a.m. all feeling well and happy to think that we were starting for Zion. After supper which was at 7 p.m. there was a meeting called of the Saints and Brother John Donaldson was appointed president of the company with all the returning missionaries to assist him in counseling the Saints and looking after them. There was a secretary appointed, also a chaplain and a captain of the guard. A.m., all dealt for. [p.138]
13th Thursday, was so sick that I was not out of bed all day.
14th Friday, still sick and was not able to be out.
15th Saturday, was out a little but felt very sick.
16 Sunday, was up all day, felt a little better. Attended what was called "Divine Service" on board. The Saints seemed to enjoy themselves in singing among themselves. They had a meeting but I did not attend it as I could not do so.
17th Monday, was feeling a great deal better than I had been. Was again able to commence [p.139] to take something to eat.
18th Tuesday, a very cold, and the sea very rough. I was about all day.
19th Wednesday, had a pleasanter night and a better morning, although very cold. Just before breakfast it was announced that there was icebergs in sight, which I saw very plain 2 of them. Then again before dinner I saw 4 more. The first two was said to be 15 or 20 miles off, but the 4 that was all seen at once was close by. As I was a writing this, it was announced by the doctor that there was more ice in view, which I go to see. After seeing it, [p.140] I saw that it was the largest of all of them all. The weather was very cold and the sea very rough.
20th Thursday, in the morning there was a great body of ice just a short distance from the ship, as far back as the eye could see. They said that [-] boat sailed alongside of it for over 10 miles. We saw a number of great bodies of [-]. We saw several small ships. Cold day, but the sea came smooth and all feeling well. I was at meeting in the morning [-] of here [-] also in the evening. I was at meeting again and spoke a short time to the people to [p.141] cheer them up on their way to Zion. Very cold but a smooth sea and all feeling well.
21st Friday, cold again and the sea very rough. Was at meeting both morning and evening. Offered prayer at night.
22 Saturday, still cold and sea rough. In the evening, the Saints had a concert on board the ship and all felt well.
23rd Sunday, the sea smooth, but weather very cold. In the forenoon the pilot came on board and all was feeling gay. In the afternoon we held meeting [p.142] with the Saints and administered the Sacrament among them. A Jew of the brethren spoke to them. I spoke a little to them on the importance of being faithful to the cause that they had embraced. The names of the brethren that are returning home with me are: John Donaldson, C. W. Staner [Stayner], A. Terry, & Cook, John Evens [Evans], Mark Beazer, W. D. Williams, W. C. Parkinson, Robert [-], [Edwin] Entwistle. In the evening we had meeting again with the saints when Brother John Evens [Evans] gave some good instructions to the Saints in regard to the kingdom of God. Brother Mark Beazer followed him with more [p.143] about the kingdom that God was to set up in the last days. All together had a good time of it.
24th Monday, a beautiful morning, but very cold. All moving along nicely and expecting to arrive at New York in the afternoon, and feeling very happy. We arrived in the afternoon alright. Stayed all night in the Castle Garden and on board the barge that was to take us and our luggage over to Jersey City to put us on the cars for Chicago.
25th Tuesday, went over to Jersey City in the forenoon and got all ready for to start out. At 7:30 I went back to New York [p.144] along with Brother James H. Hart and got a ticket for Chicago with the privilege of laying over at Pittsburgh. I left New York at 8.8 p.m. for Pittsburgh.
26 Wednesday, traveling all day on the railway, arrived in Pittsburgh about 3 p.m. Found my relations just came in after coming from the railway station where they had been looking for me. They were very glad to see me. I stayed with them about 6 hours, and now a great many things to talk about. I left Pittsburgh with the 9:50 p.m. train for Chicago, traveled all night.
27 Thursday, traveled all day and arrived at Chicago [p.145] with the 8 p.m. train. Missed making the connection with the emigrants. Got my ticket which had been sent on from New York by Brother James H. Hart and left with the 9:30 p.m. train for Council Bluffs. Traveled all night.
28 Friday, traveled all day, and in the evening arrived at Council Bluffs at 7 p.m. and was glad to join the emigrants and the returning missionaries all there. I was there perhaps 1 hours and then left Council Bluffs all feeling gay as we go marching home.
29th Saturday, a beautiful morning and all feeling well. Traveling all last [p.146] night and today going along nicely.
30th Sunday, a beautiful morning and all the people feeling well. There is few of the little children a little sick and a few of them has got the measles. About 9 a.m. we saw at a place called Aurora, about 400 miles from Ogden. . . . [p.147] THIS JOURNEY ACCOUNT TO UTAH ABRUPTLY ENDS HERE ON APRIL 30, 1882.
