Church Transportation Agent. Incoming Correspondence, 1885-1923. (CR 256 1 Bx 3 fd 16) Presiding Bishop’s Office. May 18, 1909. President Joseph F. Smith and Counselors, Dear Brethren: The company of emigrants leaving Liverpool April 29th, 1909, on the steamship Laurentic, for Montreal, Canada, in charge of Elder Niels Jensen, arrived in Salt Lake City May 12th, 1909. The company consisted of 5 elders and 40 saints. The company had a good trip across the ocean, good treatment from stewards and steamer officers. Arrived at Quebec May 7th, U.S. Emigration officers came on board and closely questioned the elder in charge. An English passenger named George E. Lowe, aged 55, was held on the grounds that he said he believed in polygamy. A little girl from Denmark was also held, but having proper papers was released; all the others passed, and the steamer left for Montreal. Elder Jensen remianed at Quebec and used his influence in behalf of the man detained, but to no avail. Elder Jensen had to take the train for Montreal and join the company there. It would be well for emigrants to be informed that U.S. Emigration officials are authorized to ask the question, “do you believe in polygamy”, and the question should be answered in the negative, to prevent any trouble as to their landing in this country. For Montreal to Salt Lake, good care provided and good attention from the railway officials. All had friends to meet them. Respectfully submitted, [CW Nibley, OP Miller, David A Smith]."
