“The following named Elders, who had labored in the Scandinavian Mission, left Copenhagen, Sept. 30, [1897], returning to their homes in Zion: Peter A. Pedersen, Nils F. Ahlberg, Lars G. Larson, Johan F. Jonason, Joseph Y. Larsen, John F. Appelquist, Andrew Anderberg, Thomas Gundersen, Edward Gundersen, Johan L. G. Johnson, Peter Ernstrom, Jens Jorgensen, Morten Chr. Mortensen, Andrew Johnson, Knud H. Fridal, Niels Chr. Sorensen, James Chr. Jensen, Olof E. Olson, Chr. Johansen, Soren S. Christensen, Ole Jensen, Henry Wing, Albert F. Young, Kjeld P. Jensen and Janne M. Sjodahl. Elder Andrew Johnson, who returned with this company, wrote the following account of the journey to America:
“I herewith send you a short statement of the last company of which I was chosen to be the leader. We left Copenhagen on Sept. 30th and came to Leith in Scotland in the evening of the 3rd of October. The next morning we went through the customhouse and landed in Glasgow about noon. Here we met some Saints and returning missionaries from Norway. The total number of our company was then 47 emigrants and 25 missionaries. We left Glasgow in the evening of Oct. 7th. On the 8th we passed Ireland, where the boat stopped, and we got a part of Irish emigrants on board. We were then about 275 emigrants on the ship. It was a little crowded, but all has gone well and the crew on board treated us well. We arrived in New York Oct. 18th, all well, but I am sorry to say two of our Saints were not allowed to come along with us. We offered to sign papers for them, but this offer was not accepted. I then telegraphed to their folks in Salt Lake City, asking them to send the necessary papers, and the emigration agents promised to do all they could to get them through. Our journey from New York to Salt Lake City was uneventful. I left the company at Granger, Wyoming, and placed them in the charge of Elder Janne M. Sjodahl.” [HSM, 359-360]
