“Thursday, April 30. The steamship ‘Furnesia’ sailed from Glasgow, Scotland, with 66 Saints on board, bound for Utah. The company consisted of 52 emigrants (25 from the British and 27 from the Scandinavian Mission) and 14 returning Elders, namely, Joseph A. Buttle, Victor P. Wells, Wm. [William] F. Pratt, Wm. [William] G. Westwood, David Jenkins, and Wm. [William] A. Taylor from the British Mission; and Erik Christiansen, Soren C. Petersen, Louis C. Larsen, Soren C. Sorenson, Wm. [William] I. Sorenson, Lewis Madsen, Charles Lundgren and Alfred G. Soderberg from the Scandinavian Mission. (Orig. Doc.)” [BMMH, 1896]. “Elder Buttle enjoyed good health in his labors . . . and sailed from Glasgow on the Furnessia [Furnesia], leaving the Clyde on April 30. The ocean voyage was pleasant as was also the railway trip from Norfolk to this city. The route followed was via New York, the journey from the latter place to Norfolk being by steamer” [DN, 52:721].
