“Tuesday February 6. The steamship ‘Astoria’ sailed from Glasgow, Scotland, with 14 Saints (3 Scandinavian and 1 British, 1 returning visitor, Janet Forrest, and 9 returning Elders) on board, bound for Utah. The Elders were Ferdinand F. Hintze, returning from a mission to Turkey, R [BLANK SPACE] W. Simkins, Thos. [Thomas] W. Jones, Geo. [George] E. Fowler A [BLANK SPACE] A. Thomas, Alexander L. Holmgren, Micheal Iben, Charles F. Carlson, and Henry F. Fernstrom. By the letter from President Ferdinand F. Hintze, the bretheren at Liverpool Office learned that the company on board the ‘Astoria’ landed [written in –at New York] on February 19, after a pleasant voyage except one day, when the heavy sea carried off two life boats and broke their rudder chain. This left them at the mercy of the waves for six hours, during which time they were driven back thirty-six miles. The break was repaired and they were carried safe to their destination. At New York they met Elder H. E. Smith and his little company, who sailed for Southampton, when all were to take their departure for home together on the afternoon of the 19th. (Orig. Doc. & Mill. Star 62:154).”
“The company continued the journey from New York by rail, as traveling by way of Wabash, Ontario, Niagra Falls, to Omaha [written in Chicago]…..(Hintze)”[BMMH, 1900].
